Riding Bromp 117km (39 in the Netherlands, 78 in Germany). Plus two motorized ferry rides: 18km on a small ferry going from Delfzijl to Emden, and another 2km on an even smaller ferry crossing the Ems River. 10 windmills - 5 in the Netherlands, mostly seen from afar so the pictures are hazy, and 5 in Germany. Some of the German ones had an extra set of wings in the back, turned 90 degrees relative to the main set. I've never seen this in the Netherlands. Perhaps these windmills aspire to be helicopters? Or maybe they inspired helicopters? Or more likely, these extra wings are used for power to turn the main set of wings to the direction of the wind. But I didn't see it happening and I'm not sure.
The two highlights of the day were the crazy and amazing boardwalk right at the start, merely 17km from Groningen and yet I have not seen it before, and the crossing of a canal on a hand-cranked ferry. My second ever, and my second in two days. Except today's crossing was a bit longer and there was enough wind to push the little ferry around. It was very difficult to align the ferry with its dock; one has to apply tension on both the forward chain and the backwards chain, and the wheels that pull them are too far apart for one person to roll at once. Fortunately two nice fishermen helped me across. And even with the three of us, it was a tough job and it took us a while to figure out the tension thing.
