Roland and I decided to walk around the Zuidlaardermeer. But the bus doesn't go there on Saturday, so we had to bike in and out. And there's a little canal at the north end, and the ferry across it only runs April through October. So we bought two beach-toy-class inflatable boats for 30 Euros each, carried them around the whole day, and used them to cross said canal. These things were unstable! Yet we got through dry, and even stayed dry until about two hours before the end, when it started raining (rain in the Netherlands is exactly the same as rain in the US - it gets you wet).
1. Yes, these hills are made of sugar beets.
2. No, the boats are not single-use throw-aways. They now belong to Roland's kids, who are excited to have them.
3. About 18.5km hiking, about 34.5km biking, and about 37 meters of paddling.
4. It was a hard day! I got my first blister in a long time.
